Expressions of Interest invited for the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Divisions 1 and 2)

The Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP
Media Release

The Australian Government is calling for expressions of interest from suitably qualified people interested in appointment as a Judge of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division 1 and 2).

The practice areas of family law and migration law as well as the Registry locations of Sydney, Parramatta, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Townsville are of particular interest to the Court at this time. However, nominations are sought across all registries and all practice areas.

This process demonstrates the Government’s ongoing commitment to transparent and merit-based judicial appointments, diversity in the judiciary, and the provision of a trusted federal judicial system.

The process will be advertised nationwide and used to fill emerging vacancies.

Process for expressions of interest

To be eligible for appointment as a Judge of a federal court, a person must have been enrolled as a legal practitioner of the High Court or a Supreme Court of a state or territory for at least five years.

An advisory panel will be formed to evaluate candidates and will develop a standing merit pool of eligible candidates to be considered for emerging vacancies.

The panel will only assess expressions of interest submitted via the Attorney General’s Department website.

People who have previously expressed an interest and would like to be again considered must lodge a new expression of interest.

Those who wish to be considered for the next evaluation should register their interest before 12:00 NOON (AEST) Friday, 27 September 2024.

Further information is available on the Department of Attorney-General's website.
