Appointments to the Administrative Review Tribunal and Administrative Appeals Tribunal
I am pleased to announce several appointments to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and the new Administrative Review Tribunal, which is due to commence on 14 October 2024.
Appointment of Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar
Mr Michael Hawkins AM has been appointed the inaugural Chief Executive Officer and Principal Registrar of the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART).
Mr Hawkins is the current Registrar of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT). I congratulate him on his appointment, and thank him for his leadership of the AAT’s important work towards establishing the ART.
Mr Hawkins brings significant understanding of the AAT’s work, both from his current role as Registrar and from having served as a part-time AAT Member from 2016 to 2022. He also brings a wealth of experience from a variety of other senior leadership roles.
Mr Hawkins will commence his five-year term as the inaugural CEO and Principal Registrar with the commencement of the ART. Mr Hawkins was assessed as suitable for appointment by an independent assessment panel through a transparent and merit-based process, conducted in accordance with the transitional provisions legislated in the Administrative Review Tribunal (Consequential and Transitional Provisions No. 1) Act 2024.
Appointments to the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and Administrative Review Tribunal
The Australian Government has also made a number of appointments to the AAT and ART.
17 members have been appointed to the AAT, comprising one Senior Member and 16 Members. The appointees will begin their terms at the AAT on 30 September 2024 and will transition to the ART when it commences.
20 members have been appointed to the ART, comprising 7 Senior Members and 13 General Members. The appointees will begin their terms once the ART commences.
Each appointee was assessed as suitable for appointment by an independent assessment panel through a transparent and merit-based process, conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for appointments to the AAT and the transitional provisions legislated in the Administrative Review Tribunal (Consequential and Transitional Provisions No. 1) Act 2024.
I congratulate each of these members on their appointment.
