Appointment of the Deputy Commonwealth Ombudsman
The Albanese Government has today announced the appointment of Ms Julie O’Brien as Deputy Commonwealth Ombudsman at the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman.
Ms O’Brien’s appointment ensures the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman can continue to deliver its important work resolving complaints and ensuring government agencies act with integrity and accountability.
Ms O’Brien’s 5-year appointment will commence on 3 November 2025, following a merit-based selection process.
Ms O’Brien is currently serving as General Counsel at the Australian Human Rights Commission and has extensive legal and regulatory experience.

Biography
Ms O’Brien holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney. She has worked for the Australian Human Rights Commission since 2004. Ms O’Brien has been General Counsel since 2010 where she is responsible for the Australian Human Rights Commission’s legal, regulatory and enforcement work. Ms O’Brien was the Interim Chief Executive of the Australian Human Rights Commission for more than six months and, in 2023, was awarded the Government Lawyer of the Year award by the Women Lawyers’ Association.
