Appointment to the Federal Court of Australia

I am pleased to announce that Mr Michael Feutrill SC has been appointed as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia and will commence on 8 March 2022.

Mr Feutrill has been appointed to the Perth Registry to replace the Hon Justice Neil McKerracher following his retirement on 5 December 2021. Mr Feutrill was admitted as a solicitor and barrister in the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 1997 and was called to the Bar in 2002. He was appointed Senior Counsel in 2018.

On behalf of the Australian Government, I congratulate Mr Feutrill on his appointment and thank him for his willingness to serve the people of Australia as a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia.

Mr Michael Feutrill SC

Mr Feutrill graduated with a Bachelor of Economics and a Bachelor of Law from the University of Western Australia in 1996. Subsequently, he attained a Masters of Laws from the University of Western Australia in 2007.

Mr Feutrill has over twenty years’ experience in commercial litigation and arbitration. He began his career in 1997 as a solicitor at Cocks Macnish and later at Herbert Smith Freehills. After joining the Bar, he spent two years as an advocate with Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s international arbitration group in Paris.

Mr Feutrill regularly appears as counsel in the superior Courts and has been instructed by international, national and local firms on a wide range of commercial matters. He is also an honorary fellow of the University of Western Australia Law School where he teaches International Commercial Arbitration and has also taught International Investment in Mineral Resources.
